'Balancing Rock' 2024 Adina Hotel, Southbank, Melbourne
The client, a hotel constructed using Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT), approached me to create a commissioned sculpture that would connect with the building's sustainable architecture and materiality. They specifically requested that the sculpture be made from CLT to align with the hotel's design and values. In my concept, I aimed to create a visual dialogue between the natural world and engineered design. I wanted the sculpture to reflect the principles of balance, sustainability, and innovation, mirroring the hotel’s eco-conscious ethos and its commitment to modern, responsible construction.

We saw an opportunity to share Adina Apartment Hotel Melbourne Southbank’s green credentials with guests in a creative way. We engaged with Shlomit to conceptualise and craft an art installation made of cross laminated timber (CLT) which would physically allow guests to see the sustainable “wonder timber” and learn more about the hotel’s green foundations. The result is fantastic! Shlomit shared our vision and was inspired to create something that represents a positive shift towards sustainability, using a completely new material. She communicated clearly with us throughout the entire process and was a joy to work with. The hotel team and owners are happy with the result and we’re pleased to say the installation has created quite a talking point in the short time it has been on display in the hotel lobby.
